Wealth Management: Junior Financial Advisor
Northwestern Mutual | New York City or Miami, FL
Primary location can be either NYC or Brickell/South Florida
Full-Time | Primarily In-Office
Office Locations
New York City: 875 Third Avenue, New York, NY and Miami: Brickell area, Miami, FL
NOTE
This is a full-time, primarily in-office position, and may be based in either our New York City or Miami office. Candidates should expect to work mostly from the office, with some flexibility for remote work as appropriate. The role requires availability Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM Eastern Time. Candidates with Northwestern Mutual experience and the SIE will be given priority.
We are looking for a highly motivated, self-sufficient professional with an entrepreneurial mindset to join our growing wealth management practice as a Junior Financial Advisor.
This role is designed for someone who already has meaningful financial services or wealth management experience and wants to grow beyond a traditional client service or operations position.
The Junior Financial Advisor will sit between a Client Service Associate and a Lead Advisor. Initially, the role will include a meaningful amount of client service, financial planning support, investment account administration, meeting preparation, follow-up, and relationship management. Over time, the expectation is that this individual will take increasing ownership of client relationships, conduct client outreach independently, participate meaningfully in financial planning and investment discussions, identify planning opportunities, and eventually manage designated client relationships directly.
We are looking for someone who wants to develop into a capable advisor while having the stability of a salary and additional upside based on performance, client service execution, and business development.
We are a high-performing Northwestern Mutual wealth management practice providing comprehensive financial planning, investment management, retirement planning, insurance planning, and strategic wealth solutions. We work with sophisticated clients and place a significant emphasis on accountability, responsiveness, attention to detail, proactive service, and long-term relationship management.
Our ideal candidate should be able to understand what is happening during client meetings, think critically, contribute without requiring constant direction, and understand the rationale behind the work they are performing. Anticipating next steps, following through consistently, and taking ownership of responsibilities are critical to success in this role.
Compensation & Benefits
· Base Salary: $85,000
· Quarterly Bonus: Potential to earn up to 10% of base salary per quarter based on client service execution, individual performance, and business development
· Health and dental insurance available through the Northwestern Mutual platform
· Paid time off, vacation, and sick time
· Retirement plan available through the Northwestern Mutual platform
· Long-term and short-term disability insurance
· FINRA licensing, coursework, and continuing education support
· Significant opportunity for increased responsibility, compensation growth, and advancement as the individual develops into a larger advisory role
Job Skills & Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in finance, economics, business, or a related field
· Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial services, wealth management, or a closely related field preferred
· SIE required
· FINRA Series 7 and Series 66, or Series 63/65, preferred
· Life & Health Insurance license preferred, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
· Strong understanding of financial planning, retirement planning, investments, regulations, compliance requirements, and industry best practices
· Experience working directly with clients strongly preferred
· Ability to understand and explain the rationale behind financial recommendations rather than simply processing transactions
· Strong attention to detail with the ability to remain highly organized and accountable
· Ability to manage multiple client priorities, follow-ups, deadlines, and workflows independently
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Comfortable speaking directly with clients and building professional rapport
· Ability to learn quickly and operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume advisory practice
· Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
· Ability to quickly learn CRM systems, financial planning software, clearing-firm systems, and other financial technology platforms
· Northwestern Mutual experience is a plus
Job Responsibilities
· Participate in client calls and meetings and capture detailed, actionable notes
· Prepare for client review meetings and financial planning discussions
· Review and update retirement projections and financial planning models based on information gathered from client meetings
· Assist in identifying planning opportunities and appropriate next steps
· Open and maintain investment and advisory accounts
· Process transfers, rollovers, and other asset movements
· Coordinate ongoing client service requests
· Manage client follow-ups, reviews, plan updates, and requests for statements or documentation
· Communicate directly with clients regarding outstanding items, account activity, planning needs, and next steps
· Maintain organized client files, workflows, and action items
· Coordinate with the investment team on account implementation and portfolio-related requests
· Develop a strong understanding of the rationale behind investment and financial planning recommendations
· Proactively identify unresolved issues, planning opportunities, and client needs rather than waiting for direction
· Follow through on action items until completion
· Gradually take greater ownership of client relationships
· Conduct independent client outreach as experience and knowledge develop
· Eventually manage designated client relationships directly
· Assist in identifying additional planning and business development opportunities within existing client relationships
· Support Lead Advisors in preparing for and conducting client meetings
· Develop toward independently leading client meetings and presenting recommendations
What We Are Looking For
We are specifically looking for someone who can demonstrate real, hands-on experience rather than general exposure to financial services.
Candidates should be prepared to discuss specific examples of
· Client relationships they have personally supported or managed
· Financial or retirement plans they have helped develop
· Investment recommendations they have participated in or presented
· Client meetings they have participated in or led
· Complex client situations or problems they have personally helped resolve
· Processes or workflows they have independently owned
· Situations where they identified a problem or opportunity without being directed to do so
· Client follow-up and relationship management responsibilities they have personally handled
· Business development opportunities they have identified or helped execute
We are less interested in someone who has only been around these activities and more interested in someone who can clearly explain what they personally did, how they approached it, and what the outcome was.
Career Path
This position is intended to bridge the gap between a traditional Client Service Associate and a Lead Advisor.
The role will initially include a meaningful amount of client service, financial planning support, account implementation, and follow-up responsibility. As the individual demonstrates technical knowledge, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to independently manage client relationships, the position will progressively evolve toward greater advisory responsibility.
Client Service Associate → Junior Financial Advisor → Lead Advisor
The long-term objective is for this person to develop into an advisor who can independently manage client relationships, lead meetings, make recommendations, identify planning opportunities, and contribute to the continued growth of the practice.
For someone who performs well, develops strong technical knowledge, demonstrates sound judgment, and builds trusted client relationships, there is significant opportunity to take on greater advisory responsibility over time.
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, status as a protected veteran, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or assume sponsorship of an employment visa at this time. Any employment offer will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of applicable background and FINRA brokerage checks.
